The Western Algarve with children: peaceful, close to nature and relaxed
Holidays with children are wonderful – but they can quickly become exhausting if you choose the wrong destination. Crowded beaches, long walks, noise late into the night? That’s exactly what we wanted to avoid.
That’s why we deliberately chose the Western Algarve – and, in particular, our holiday home in Raposeira.
Here is our honest review for families who aren’t looking for an action-packed club holiday, but rather nature, peace and quiet, and genuine quality time together.
Why the Western Algarve is ideal for families
The western Algarve around Raposeira is different from many of the Algarve’s better-known resorts. It’s wilder, quieter and more unspoilt.
Instead of huge hotel complexes and entertainment programmes, you’ll find sweeping landscapes, small villages and plenty of space to breathe.
This is a huge advantage, especially when you have children:
- less traffic
- no noisy party areas
- more opportunities to experience nature
- a relaxed daily routine
Here, children can simply be children – and parents can switch off for a while.
Quiet beaches instead of mass tourism
One of the biggest draws for families is the beaches. Many of them are spacious, clean and not overcrowded.
Particularly family-friendly are:
- Praia da Ingrina – mostly sheltered from the wind, often calm waters, perfect for young children. You can park right by the beach car park and be at the water’s edge in no time. No need to lug children and beach gear around.
- Praia do Zavial – beautifully situated, with plenty of space to play and explore. The beach stretches far inland. At high tide, this often creates streams or small lakes that turn into warm pools in summer. Ideal for children to splash about in, as it’s separated from the sea and the waves. This means water toys can be tried out without any worries.
Of course, there are also stronger waves on the west coast – but that’s precisely why there’s plenty of choice. Depending on the wind and weather, you can almost always find a beach that’s suitable for children.
Short distances, less stress
One aspect of family holidays that’s often overlooked: travel times.
From Raposeira, you can reach:
- lots of beaches within 10–15 minutes
- Supermarkets and cafés – quick and easy
- Sagres, with its restaurants, ice-cream parlours and walking routes, is just a short distance away
- Vila Do Bispo and the nearest playground
Driving less means:
more time on the beach, more breaks, and everyone in a better mood 😉.
Experiencing nature rather than constant entertainment
The Western Algarve isn’t the place for traditional children’s entertainment – and that’s precisely what makes it so special.
Here, experiences happen all by themselves:
- Collecting shells
- short walks along the coast
- Walks right behind the house
- Watching the waves
- marvel at sunsets
- Discovering animals and plants – A small flock of sheep often roams around our area. If you’re lucky, you might even get to stroke a little lamb.
Here, children learn to engage with nature through play – without any screens or fixed timetables.
And if you’re looking for a change of scenery, you can reach Lagos in under half an hour – with little traffic, just follow one road straight ahead.
There you’ll find, for example, cafés for children and families, an indoor swimming pool, and plenty of boat trips to caves and rock formations.

Our holiday home: relaxed and family-friendly
Our holiday home isn’t a luxury resort – it’s a place where you can settle in and stay.
Families in particular appreciate:
- the quiet location
- Plenty of space indoors and outdoors. The little ones can play in the enclosed front garden or help clean the wetsuit.
- Light traffic
- cosy evenings after a long day at the beach
Eating out with the kids? No problem.
Portugal is extremely child-friendly. Almost every restaurant has high chairs available, and if things get a bit noisy, everyone takes it in their stride. There are plenty of laid-back restaurants in the area where children are welcome. No pretentious fuss, no stress – just straightforward, good food.
Whether it’s fresh fish at Armazém, Indian food at Holi Dewali or burgers at Three Little Birds (which even has a small play area) – children are welcome everywhere.
Or you can simply stay at home and enjoy dinner together as the sun slowly sets.
Who the Western Algarve is perfect for – and who it isn’t
Perfect for families who:
- Appreciate the peace and quiet
- Love nature
- don’t need constant entertainment
- enjoy spending time together
Perhaps not ideal for families who:
- Search for large hotel complexes
- Entertainment and kids’ clubs await
- want to be right in the thick of things
And that’s perfectly fine – because your holiday should suit you.
Conclusion: Less planning, more time together
The Western Algarve isn’t a bustling holiday destination – it’s a place to unwind.
It’s a wonderful spot for families looking for a proper break.
If you’re looking for a holiday where children can play outdoors, parents can relax, and the days aren’t packed to the brim, then our holiday home in Raposeira could be just the thing for you.
Sometimes less really is more.
